Life Cycle Analysis
Conducting analysis of the life cycle of maple syrup allows our industry members to make changes that reduce the carbon footprint.
REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
Many IMSI members are participating in academic studies to understand and calculate the carbon footprint over the entire life cycle of maple products.
Life cycle analysis measures environmental impacts at every stage of creating maple syrup from making the bottles, shipping materials, collecting the sap to packaging the syrup, to consumption and disposal and recycling of the container. The method the maple industry uses is based on recognized international standards including ISO standards 14040 – 14044.
New and more energy efficient approaches are being implemented in the process of evaporating sap, such as switching to cleaner and renewable energy, greater use of reverse osmosis that separates water from sap before boiling and modernizing our evaporation equipment and production processes to reduce our carbon footprint and improve our environmental performance.
